Three ways to make espresso at home

There is no universal best machine. The right choice depends on your routine, how much control you want, and what else you need to buy.

01 / HANDS-ON

Manual and lever

You control more of the process. Rewarding if you enjoy learning and adjusting, but expect a slower routine and separate milk equipment if you make lattes.

What to consider
02 / THE MIDDLE GROUND

Semi-automatic

You prepare the coffee and start or stop the shot. A common route for people who want to learn espresso without giving up convenience.

What to consider
03 / CONVENIENCE

Super-automatic

The machine handles more steps for you. Compare cleaning, drink options, size, and the limits on how much you can adjust.

A practical espresso machine checklist

Use these questions to narrow your shortlist before looking at individual models.

01 · Daily routine

How much work do you want to do?

Think about grinding beans, measuring a dose, tamping, pulling a shot, steaming milk, and cleaning up. A simpler routine may be worth more to you than extra controls.

02 · Total budget

Count the whole setup

For many semi-automatic machines, a capable espresso grinder matters as much as the machine. Budget for a grinder, scale, milk pitcher, filters, and cleaning supplies where needed.

03 · Your drinks

Espresso, milk drinks, or both?

If you mostly drink lattes or cappuccinos, pay close attention to the milk workflow and how quickly the machine can move between brewing and steaming.

04 · Your space

Measure before comparing

Check counter width, depth, and overhead clearance. Leave room to fill the water tank, remove a bean hopper if applicable, and use the steam wand comfortably.

05 · Ownership

Read the maintenance instructions

Compare the manufacturer’s cleaning process, replacement parts, warranty, and service options. Make sure the ongoing care fits your schedule.
